Acerenza Cathedral
The current cathedral was built between the 11th and 13th centuries on the remains of a previous early Christian church, which in turn was built on what remained of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Hercules Acheruntine. The construction works began thanks to the generosity of Robert Guiscard in 1059 with Bishop Godano, the first to have the title of archbishop, but continued and ended with his successor, Arnaldo, who, thanks to French workers, made available by the Normans themselves, the work is finished.
In Dracula's footsteps from Romania to Acerenza: the vampire's daughter is buried here
ACERENZA - It is said that Mona Lisa lived in Lagonegro (Potenza), that Alessandro Manzoni was inspired by Monticchio (Potenza) for "that branch of Lake Como" and that Leonardo da Vinci left a trace of his pictorial art in Basilicata . Legend, invention, true stories? An aura of mystery surrounds the revelations of historians (or pseudo-historians), but in this sample of relationships (all to be verified) between famous people and the Lucanian territory there is a case that seems to leave no room for doubts and suspicions of "manipulation » of historical reality: Vlad III, better known as Count Dracula, would have a link with Basilicata and, in particular, with Acerenza (Potenza).
